This silver plaque on black Belgian marble (a rare material from Belgium, highly sought after and called “the king of black marbles”) depicts Echidna, a Greek mythological figure, half woman and half snake. In Greek mythology, she was a monstrous female being: from her hips up she was a beautiful girl, otherwise a colossal snake; she the daughter of Forcides and Ceto. She lived in a cave in the land of the Arimi. In union with Tifeo or Typhon she generated Cerberus and Ortro (Geryon’s dog), the Hydra and the Chimera; she also fathered the Sphinx and the Nemean lion. While Hesiod calls her immortal, according to Apollodorus she was killed by Argos.
