This 925 silver pendant has been set with an authentic Roman coin (an “axis”) depicting two-faced Janus. On the reverse of the coin we can see a ship’s prow facing right with “ROMA” written underneath. Giano Bifronte, Janus Bifrons, is one of the most ancient divinities of the ancient Latins and Romans, venerated since the dawn of the city of Rome. Depicted with two faces, one mirroring the other, Janus is the god of beginnings, doors and passages. Most likely Giano is one of the most ancient divinities venerated by the Romans together with Quirino. The two-faced god, with his look to the future and the past at the same time, represented the god of moments of passage and the cycle of the seasons. Precisely for this reason various scholars of the history of religions have associated Janus with the most ancient Italic Indo-European traditions. Then there are numerous clues that identify two-faced Janus as one of the most important Roman divinities, primarily his epithets. Janus is deorum deus, god of the gods and also Janus pater, Janus the Father. According to legend, it was the god Quirinus himself, or Romulus, who built a temple after the victory over the Sabines. In the Roman myth, two-faced Janus is the ancient god and king of Lazio. He is a benevolent and magnanimous god who gives “civilization” to the aborigines and natives and founds a city on the Janiculum. Not only that, Janus is the father of the god of the Tiber, Tiberino, who had following his relationship with a Nymph, Camese. But the importance of Janus does not end here, it is in fact always he who welcomes in Lazio Saturn, the father of the gods ousted by his son Jupiter. Having arrived in Latium, according to ancient Roman legends, Saturn becomes the king of the region, with the permission of Janus, thus making the golden age of ancient Lazio flourish. Each of our jewels has a certificate of authenticity which certifies its originality and origin from the Greek or Roman world.
