925 silver pendant with original Roman coin depicting a dolphin.

Denario (1st century AD)

Front: IMP. CAES. DOMITIANVS AVG. P.M. Graduated head facing right.

Rear: COS. VII DES. VIII P.P., dolphin wrapped around an anchor.

For the ancient Greek and Roman sailors, dolphins were a symbol of divine protection and guidance because they helped sailors by navigating the bow wave of ships at sea. They were seen as messengers of the gods and therefore associated with the Nereids, the daughters of Poseidon, the heroine Galatea, the goddess of love Aphrodite and the music-loving sun god, Apollo.
