An authentic Roman carnelian from the 1st-2nd century AD has been set in this 18 kt gold ring. which depicts the goat Amalthea resting with the two front legs on a tree, and a shepherd behind her. The mythology says that Jupiter was the son of Cronus, the god who devoured his children because it was prophesied that one of them would usurp him. Jupiter’s mother Rhea fled to Crete where she gave birth to him in a cave. Jupiter was placed in a cradle hanging from a tree on the slopes of Mount Ida in Crete and fed with wild honey and milk from the goat Amalthea.
In a famous painting by Poussin, a nymph holds Jupiter in her arms, holding a jug of milk to her lips, while another collects honey and a shepherd milks the goat Amalthea.
