After many periods of turmoil in the history of the Roman Empire, the era of the Five “good emperors” arrived. Rather than being selected by dynastic succession, these five rulers were chosen and trained by their predecessors to ensure smooth and peaceful transitions of power. Among the five, the emperor Trajan (reigned in 98-117 AD) obtained the title of Optimus, or “best”. It was Trajan who not only widened the boundaries of the Roman Empire to the maximum, but also ruled with singular benevolence and generosity towards his subjects.
