In this sterling silver coin, dating back to the 5th century BC, and coming from Magna Graecia (more precisely from Sicily), a crab is depicted. On the back of the coin we can see a sea eagle.
The city of temples, among the most prosperous of Magna Graecia, Agrigento (Akragas in Greek) was defined by the poet Pindar as "the most beautiful city of mortals". Nestled on the confluence of the Akragas and Hypsas rivers, it enjoyed the benefits of agriculture and the sea.
This vocation is well represented by this silver coin on which the figures of a sea eagle and a crab, typical animals of those lands, are engraved. The two subjects may also be a tribute to the Greek gods Zeus and Poseidon.
